I Am (Still) Legend -
In Richard Matheson's book, Robert Neville is the last living man on Earth... but he is not alone. Every other man, woman, and child has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for Neville's blood.
|
|
By day, he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn. Yes, yes, we know all that but the new adaptation as been in various states of development hell for a couple of decades now and rumour follows rumour follows rumour.
We need wait no more (well, a bit) for none other than Will Smith WILL be Neville in Warner Brothers big budget version of I AM LEGEND, the story previously filmed as Last Man On Earth (Vincent Price) and Omega Man (Charlton 'Gung-Ho' Heston).
And to top that, Johnny Depp may be playing Ben Cortman, Neville's neighbour, who is the first to get infected and becomes the head vampire.
Filming is supposed to begin in September for a Summer 2007 release. Francis Lawrence will direct. (I, for one, have been waiting for this for almost as long as we waited for V For Vendetta. Let’s hope they get it right.)

Abattoir Wraps (An Update) -
Mike Watt and Amy Lynn Best of Happy Cloud Pictures have announced that principal photography has been completed on ABATTOIR. The vampire opus was written and directed by Watt and produced by Best, who also stars in the story of a long-held truce between a vampire-operated bordello and a gang of Irish mercenaries that is bloodily shattered.
The cast includes Aaron Bernard, Steve Foland, Alyssa Herron, Sofiya Smirnova, Bill Homan, Zoe Hunter, Megan Ruggiero and Rachelle Williams. Scooter McCrae is composing the original score, and the movie will sport an opening song performed by Lorraine a’ Malena and written by fantasy veteran Neil Gaiman.

Hartnett Horror -
Josh Hartnett is in talks to star in the film version of Steve Niles' popular graphic novel 30 DAYS OF NIGHT for Columbia Pictures and Sam Raimi/Rob Tapert's Ghost House Pictures. Hartnett will play one of the husband-and-wife sheriff duo of Barrow, Alaska, a town that literally goes dark for a month every year and thus becomes prey for vampires. When the undead arrive, the couple have to decide whether to flee or stand and protect their fellow townspeople. David Slade will direct 30 DAYS from a script by Stuart Beattie and Brian Nelson.

Oh Mama! Bubba’s Back -
Did you see Bubba HoTep? The one where genre God Bruce Campbell played the aging Elvis fighting a soul sucking mummy whilst also dealing with cancer of the dick. It was excellent. Well, Elvis is doing another comeback special and this time he’s up against a new enemy in director Don Coscarelli’s BUBBA NOSFERATU: CURSE OF THE SHE VAMPIRE.
Although it’s only in the early stages and the script is incomplete Coscarelli confirms that this one will feature the younger, thirtysomething King as seen in HoTep’s flashback sequences. Joe Lansdale who wrote the short stories on which the first movie was based will write the script.
And if this one’s a success BUBBA SASQUATCH will follow. Ooh. I’m all exited now.

Drac’s Back -
Jan De Bont’s Blue Tulip Productions and Atchity Entertainment have teamed on a new feature which will be the first officially sanctioned sequel to Bram Stoker’s DRACULA. Tentatively titled THE UN-DEAD, after the subtitle of Stoker’s original novel, the script was written by Ian Holt and is set 25 years after the book’s events. All the surviving protagonists (including Jonathan and Mina Harker and Professor Van Helsing) appear, along with Inspector Cotford, a character cut from the original manuscript, facing the bloodsucking Count once again. The Stoker family has officially recognized Holt’s screenplay, which is the first adaptation to receive such approval since the 1931 Bela Lugosi movie.
A director is currently being sought for the project, which is planned as a big-budget, adult Gothic horror with top A-list actors (None of which are named at the moment).
Holt acquired the rights to the best-selling book IN SEARCH OF DRACULA. He then travelled to Transylvania and spent a night at Bran Castle where Vlad Tepes is said to have spent time (Yeah, about three days I heard). Holt also visited the prince’s palace in Romania, and wound up being knighted by The Transylvanian Society of Dracula into the Order of the Dragon (We’ve got a few of them in the LVG I believe). In addition, he was allowed by a Stoker family representative to read Stoker’s original handwritten manuscript (where he discovered Cotford’s existence), currently stored under glass at Philadelphia’s Rosenbach Museum.

Daybreaks For Undead -
The long awaited follow up to the Australian Spiereg brother’s zombie fest UNDEAD will be a vampire film (yay!) by the title of DAYBREAKERS. Shooting will commence (hopefully) in early 2007 in Queensland, the brother’s home state, depending on cast commitments and, of course, that all important final financing. Lionsgate have shown interest in distribution and Stephen Boyle, FX master on UNDEAD, will be working with the well-established Weta Workshop. Chris Brown, producer of the recent Nick Cave penned THE PROPOSITION, is on board and is well known for his enthusiasm for horror flicks. Which is handy. The Spieregs have stated that viewers should expect something “much darker and scarier than UNDEAD.” Whoo..I’m SOOO frightened.

Dracula Rises From The Grave (What? Again!) -
The BBC have announced that they are to produce a new version of Bram Stoker’s DRACULA, their first attempt since their highly acclaimed Louis Jourdan vehicle in 1977. It will star Marc Warren (Hustle, Doctor Who) as Dracula, Sophia Myles (Underworld) as Lucy and Stephanie Leonidas (Mirrormask) will portray the new Mina Harker. Also in the cast will be Rafe Spall (Shaun Of The Dead) as Jonathan Harker, Dan Stevens (Frankenstein) as Arthur Holmwood and the great, veteran actor David Suchet (Poirot) will get his teeth into the eccentric Van Helsing role. The script, by Stewart Harcourt, was originally commissioned as a starring vehicle for Martin Kemp some four years ago but that production was cancelled when ITV realised that the BBC was planning it’s own version, which was to be written by horror novelist Stephan Gallagher. That version came to nothing and the BBC has acquired Harcourt’s script for themselves in order to make the two-hour TV movie a major part of the Christmas schedules. Filming should take place in England during August under the directorship of Bill Eagles who has helmed recent episodes of Invasion and C.S.I. In an interview with The Guardian newspaper Producer Trevor Hopkins said, “Stewart Harcourt’s script paints a compelling and intelligent new adaptation of this classic story. Riddled with syphilis and sex, it penetrates the surface of Victorian society and plunges us into the dark heart of Dracula. This is my personal take on the classic Bram Stoker novel. And I hope its scenes of sex, horror and disease will blow the cobwebs off traditional period drama and provide a classic literary chiller perfect for a dark winter night.” So do we mate, so do we.

Brother, Brother, Brotherly Blood -
In forthcoming movie BROTHERHOOD OF BLOOD, Ken Foree (Dawn Of The Dead) plays a vampire who is captured by vampire hunters who need information from him to survive. Queue torture scene with extraction of fangs by pliers, which echoes scenes from a little movie directed by a certain Tarantino that you might well remember. The movie also stars Victoria Pratt, Sid Haig and Jason Connery. Directors are Michael Roesch and Peter Scheerer. Juergen Popp is Executive Producer, Nicole Ackermann and Mark Burman (The Thirst) are the Producers. Now in postproduction the film is due for release late this year or early in 2007.
