Rosencrantz And Gulidenstern Are Undead -
Lots of points for the title alone here – this is described as the best Vampire-Romance Holy-Grail Shakespeare Comedy ever made – and no doubt the only one. Featuring the original Karate Kit Ralph Macchio, and inspired by Hamlet this is the story of a 2,000 year old conspiracy which reveals that Hamlet to be authored by a master vamp as the cast members are slowly turned one by one. Also described as Shaun Of The Dead crossed with Scream, this film has no UK release date for this one yet, but find out more at undeadflick.com.

Legion -
Everyone loves a good apocalyptic war in heaven vs. earth movie involving senior angels, and Legion looks like a great example the genre. God has lost faith in feckless mankind and sends down his legion of angels to bring ont he end times. Starring Paul Bettany as an archangel fallen to earth to help mankind in the war and ensure the saviour is born, this is more action flick than theological study judging by the trailer, but it looks suitably moody and dark. How would you escape if surrounded by homicidal angels in a remote diner?
Out March 2010 in the UK, get your halo at legionmovie.com

Stake Land - In Stake Land, a young boy is about to learn how cruel the world can become. The USA has collapsed in an empty pit of disaster, and a vampire epidemic swept across the nation's abandoned towns and cities. It's up to Mister, a death dealing, rogue vampire hunter, to get people to safety. Armed with a trunk full of wooden stakes and a desperate will to stay alive, Mister makes his way through locked down towns, recruiting fellow travellers along the way. A devout nun (Kelly McGillis as "Sister") joins the small team of survivors. She faces a crisis of faith during the vampire bloodshed, ultimately taking up arms to do battle! Stake Land is a gritty, post-apocalyptic road movie with teeth – out 2010.

The Bleeding - Just what I always hoped for: Vinnie Jones as a Vampire King. Michael Madsen as a vengeful vampire hunter. What could go wrong? This looks hilariously bad based in the trailer, but might be fun. For all you tattooists out there is also features Kat Von D (Pictured). Synopsis: When ex-US Army Ranger Shawn Black searches for the brutal killer of his parents, he discovers a terrifying family of vampires led by Cain, The Vampire King. Tipped off by a friendly cop and fortified with blessed weaponry supplied to him by a boozy priest, Black must infiltrate the vampire's lair - a former chemical weapons factory turned night club where he will finally meet the creature that has changed his life forever.

Planet Of The Vampire Women - Another piece of classy entertainment to finish off early cuts! This is an action-packed sci-fi adventure of the galaxy’s sexiest space pirates who pull off the ultimate heist only to crash into an unknown world. Finding themselves trapped on a storm-shrouded planet overrun with monsters, the intergalactic outlaws unknowingly awaken an unspeakable horror that causes the dead to walk...with an insatiable lust for blood! Can’t wait. Still in production towards the end of ’09, look for this next summer.

Coraline - This is Henry “Nightmare Before Christmas” Selick’s latest film (no, Nightmare wasn’t directed by Tim Burton – despite his name being in the title) and is also an adaptation of a spooky Neil Gaimen novel – if you liked NBC, you’ll love this – and its even darker and scarier. This is the story is about a young girl who finds a doorway to a parallel world with an improved version of her parents – but not all is as it seems, not least the fact that everyone has (genuinely disturbing) sewn on buttons instead of eyes. This is now out on DVD in the UK (as of October ’09) – a perfect Halloween present! More at coralline.com

Grace - Now this looks truly gruesome: A woman gives birth to dead baby and wills it back to life – and this film pulls no punches in its depiction of the results – the child emerges with a taste for human blood (so, yeah, it counts as a vampire movie?). Grace’s mother Madeline must make certain sacrifices to keep her baby alive – how far will she go? Full marks for being an original story – way too many horrors are just remake or sequels nowadays. Just out on DVD in the US, but no UK date yet, this is not one for the squeamish, more at grace-themovie.com

I Sell The Dead - Never Trust A Corpse: A story of 19th century grave robbers, this stars Dom Monaghan (Lord Of The Rings, Lost) and Hellboy himself Ron Perlman, and is an undead movie with a difference. Blake & Grimes deal in the hunting of foul creatures that just won’t stay put in the earth. Out on DVD now (October ’09), this is a mix of comedy and grungy Victoriana - find out more at isellthedead.com

The Thirst - A vampire movie from the director of the superb Oldboy? (Chan-wook Park) – sold! 2009 has been a great year for new takes on the old vamp myths, the highlight so far being Let The Right One In – another foreign film (Korea) attempts an equally audacious reinvention, without any of the traditional trappings of the myth – no stakes, garlic, holy water and certainly no high-cheek boned moody hero who is hundreds of years old, but looks about 12. Thirst involves a priest who becomes infected (vampirised) after volunteering to test a new vaccine. The priest struggles to maintain his humanity as he begins an affair and his depravity deepens – the seven deadly sins have never been harder to resist. Thirst won the jury prize at Cannes in 2009 and is out in the cinema October ’09 in the UK.

Vampire Party - The French get in on the act with a new comedy out on DVD November – rubbish title (The literal translation was “The Teeth Of The Night”) but it looks worth a try. A couple get invited to the most exclusive party of the year in a remote castle – but (no way!) turns out they are on the dinner menu. This party is going to suck.

Suck - A vampire rock comedy featuring Alice Cooper, Iggy Pop and Malcolm McDowell? Sign me up. A bunch of musical no-hopers search for immortality and success – how? Easy, get turned into vampires! McDowell plays the obligatory Vampire Hunter, this looks like fun knockabout stuff.
