Black Sheep
Review by Various LVG Members
27-Sep-07
There are 40 million sheep in New Zealand and they’re pissed off!
On a vast New Zealand sheep station, a reckless genetic engineering experiment goes horribly wrong, turning sheep into bloodthirsty killers.
Terrified of sheep and dosed up on therapy, Henry Oldfield returns to his family’s farm to sell out to his older brother Angus, unaware that something baaaad is going on: Angus’ reckless genetic engineering program.
One bite from an infected sheep seems to have an alarming effect on those bitten...
Quick takes from various LVG members:
"Got off to a fairly good start with interesting plot and character development but seemed to go rapidly downhill mid-way and degerated into something resembling a 'Carry On' film towards the end as the plot, dialogue and pretty much everything that gave the film any degree of credibility seemed to fly rapidly out the window."
"There was gore, gratutious, unsubtle and not particularly well done either. However, if there is anything that the special FX and Direction could be praised for it would be the skills required to make poor innocent sheep into the massed monsters of the film."
"It was funny, yes, but there are only so many sheep-shagging and fart jokes that you can crack without making the audience groan!"
""I think what we have here is a Directors attempt to follow in the footsteps of Peter Jackson's Brain Dead, but, I would hope that the horror and even comedy horror has moved on a bit and Black Sheep, I'd say, didn't really make the grade."
"I enjoyed it, as a very silly film and nothing more! 90 minutes of gross out gore and every sheep pun imaginable."
"I really enjoyed it. Partly because it was easy to follow. Enough funny bits and gore. It actually went beyond my expectations!"
"It was very "New Zealand" humour..... perhaps you need to meet some of them to understand that this genre is normal train of thought over there. *chuckles* (and apologies to any offended kiwis reading this )!"
"As for the film, well I really enjoyed it! Definitely not Oscar material but pretty much what I'd expect of a horror film from down-under. OTT gross out (and unrealistic looking) gore with every sheep pun imaginable. A very silly comedy film rather than a horror. 90 minutes of leave-your-brain-at-the-door entertainment!"
"It was amusing enough I guess. Just not really a work of art. I think the website led we to expect something a bit better"
Competition
We have a few squeezy "stress sheep" (See above) to give away to those who can create the top worse sheep-based taglines (or if too tough, the most groan-worthy sheep jokes) to the film (think the "Violence of The Lambs"). Send entries via post (PO Box) or email the LVG Secretary and include your address! We’ll post the top 10 on the website. Closing date = November 15th.
