Members ~ Introducing Ken (DJ Rockula)!
Q. Introduce yourself – name, nickname, where you were born, how old you are, where you live, what your job is or what you study
A. Hello there! My given name is Ken and I have to admit to never having used nor having been given any nickname. I do, however, use DJ Rockula when spinning discs and have previously used DJ Bloodsucker and DJ Ken a.k.a Just Ken.
I was born, raised and have lived all of my 44 years in various locations around Essex (Hornchurch, Clacton and Manningtree). I do have a sister called Tracey but I’ve never noticed her wearing white stilettos.
My parentage and ancestry is a strange mix of true Cockney and Welsh mining stock with some distant French in there too. This probably accounts for my loud, gobby nature and my musical bent.
I’ve only had two jobs since I left school in 1978 both of which were sh*t and neither of which I now do due to having become a virtual Raspberry since the Osteoarthritis kicked in.
Q. What do you do in your spare time? What are you passionate about?
A. My spare time is filled with music, films and beer. I am an old~school Punk Rocker who discovered psychedelia and, much later, Paganism. I’m not really a Goth as such although I do like the classic music being old enough to be around when Siouxsie and Bauhaus were in short bondage trousers and I enjoy the 80’s bands like The Mission and The Cult. I’m really much more turned on by piss ’n’ vinegar ‘garage’ bands (and I don’t mean Drum &Bass) and 60’s influenced music. I also DJ for Harley Davidson ‘Hog’ rallies.
Q. What is you most treasured possession?
A. I’m quite obsessive compulsive about my music collection but not really into collecting the formats. It’s the sounds that count, not whether it’s on vinyl, tape or CD.
I had, until recently, the largest vampire DVD collection of anyone in this group and I still do the new film news for The Chronicles but I have passed the majority of the discs on to an (attractive) younger member as my tastes have diversified somewhat. I like zombies and werewolves too. I have, in fact, thought of starting a sub~group of hairy members who like real ale and scratching their balls in public.
Q. Which living person would you most like to meet?
A. Despite my changing tastes I would still like to have a face to face with Christopher Lee as it was his portrayal of Dracula that turned me on to the Undead back in 1975 on one of those late night BBC2 horror double~bills. It was ‘Dracula Has Risen From The Grave’ and, as a 13 year old, it both scared and exited me. Uncle Chris; may he live forever.
Q. Name your top three bands.
A.Back to music. It’s always back to the tunes with me. My favourite bands are far too many to list but I am a great fan of The Stranglers (both pre and post Hugh Cornwell), Paul Weller (yes, even The Style Council) and The Damned. You might notice that these all came out of the Punk and New Wave explosion of 1976/77.
Q. Name your top three movies.
A. My favourite films are Sam Peckinpah’s ‘Cross Of Iron’ from 1976 (finally released uncut after 30 years), the original cut of ‘Bladerunner’ 1982 (with the Harrison voice over) and Todd Browning’s ‘Freaks’ 1931 (which I was turned on to by my wife Xa).
Q. What is the most important book you have read? (can be non-vampire)
A. I’ve read a hell of a lot of books in my time but Richard Matheson’s ‘I Am Legend’ and the original graphic novel of ‘V For Vendetta’ by Alan Moore remain my all time favourites.
Q. Which is your favourite horror/vampire book?
A. ‘I Am Legend’ was the first and best vampire novel I ever read and I also enjoyed the Vincent Price film version ‘Last Man On Earth’ which is much underrated and pretty faithful to the source material. As is, I must say, the new ‘V For Vendetta’ movie thank Ye Godz.
Q. Do you think vampires are real? Explain
A. Are vampires real? Of course they are. They’re called politicians.
Q. What were your reasons for joining the London Vampyre Group? What do you want to get out of being a member?
A. I joined the LVG (after being a long time member of ‘The Vampyre Society’) to meet fellow vampire enthusiasts and expand the fantasy. Of course, back in the day, there were many members who were vampire fans but not ‘goths’ per se
Q. What is your favourite word?
A. My favourite word is either Liberty or Bollocks. Take your pick.
Q. What is your greatest fear?
A. I fear my body will give out before my brain does I’ll be trapped inside a useless shell. But hell, until it happens and I can’t get to the bar, what’s the point in dwelling on it.
Q. What is the most important thing life has taught you?
A. Life is just a bowl of Allbran. You get up every morning and it’s there. Don’t stress it. If you think important things are getting you down just look up at the night sky and realise just how little ANY of it really matters. Then go to the bar.
Q. Give a song lyric/quote from a film or person or a passage/sentence from a book that you feel embodies your approach to life
A. "I believe in this (and it’s been tested by research). He who fucks Nuns, will later join the Church." Joe Strummer.
"The world is an oyster but your future’s a clam" Paul Weller.
"Don’t let the bastards grind you down." Traditional.
Q. Do you have a livejournal or personal webpage that we can link to?
A. No
